Illuminated Address

Have you heard of this? Do you know what an illuminated address is? The State Library of NSW describes them, “From the late 1870s to the 1930s, illuminated addresses were a popular way to commemorate special occasions and were given to recognize outstanding service. They featured beautiful calligraphy and ornate designs of native flora and fauna.”

Amandus Hoschke was held in such high regard by other settlers that on the occasion of him returning to Germany for a visit, he was presented with gifts including this illuminated address. The address has been gifted by family to the Coffs Harbour Museum, soon to be know as Yarilla Arts & Museum “the YAM” and is held as part of their Hoschke Family Collection.
