Amandus was born, on 1 January 1844 in a small village [Ueckermünde] near Stettin Germany. His father was a boot maker. He went to sea at 18 years of age on a trading ship. He signed onto a ship bringing migrants to Brisbane, Australia.
After deserting the ship, Amandus joined coastal trading ship, for 3 years, in Australia. He worked at Bathurst. Then he joined NSW railways working on the Bathurst to Orange line, he was also a fettler on the rail line from Orange to Wellington.
He married Mary Ann Drew on 19 April 1870 • Georges Plains, New South Wales, Australia.
On 18th March 1902, Amandus became a naturalised Australian. In 1909, he revisited Germany, and on his return said, his old country had disappeared, replaced by pure materialism and false hero worship, ideas that he now found foreign.
Amandus and Mary would have a family or 13 children, as shown below:
